Six Years Ago Tonight…

December 23rd, 2007 · 20 Comments

…Sam and I stood together in an 18th century wine cellar on the Ile de la Cité and exchanged marriage vows with only two friends and the french tag artist who officiated as witnesses. This year, I dragged our marriage through the mud. Twice. I’m beyond grateful that my husband is as patient and as forgiving as he is. It’s a marathon, he tells me. Not a sprint. I do not discount how fortunate I am that he sees things this way.

We’re certainly not the same people we were on that Sunday night six years ago and there is a loss in that for me. It’s hard to let go of what I loved and embrace what’s in it’s place. I’ve struggled with this. Things are different. Not bad. Just different. And I’m getting caught up to speed. Still, as much as we’ve changed—individually and as a couple—I’d do it again the exact same way.

You are such a striking couple. Happy Anniversary to you both. I’ve been doing the marriage gig for 18 years come February and all I can say is peaks and valleys, baby, peaks and valleys. Wishing you many more peaks.

You are lucky that he is patient.

He is lucky that you keep things interesting.

We are lucky to know you both.

    Congratulations!

A toast to you both on your anniversary! To many more years of adventure, love, laughter (and great photos of it all… well maybe not ALL of it…)

Wow! Tom and I got married in December too. I posted about our anniversary (blog and flickr) this year. What a mixed bag of tricks it is to go visiting places remembered, huh? Take care and happy holidays to you, Sam, and Ruby.

Happy Anniversary! I so know the feeling, when you think back on the feelings and who you were back when you were first together/married. My husband and I have been married nearly 12 yrs come 6 Jan. It happens to everyone that you change and grow, hopefully together, but not everyone realizes it or accepts it. I think that is the key to appreciating your marriage as you grow older, and cheers to y’all for doing it.

What a great setting! That wedding picture is gorgeous!
My marriage had a rough year as well, with a few “leave if that’s going to make you happier” moments. Looking back, I would have missed out on so many happy ones if I had.
Why doesn’t anyone tell you it’s going to be this hard?

    Happy Anniversary!
I just fund your blog through your comment on mrs.g’s blog (there you have it for a thriving blogger’s community…)
I am not a runner so I am not sure if a marriage is like a marathon, but I mountain bike and you can definitely compare it to that. My marriage just got through a huge rocky section this summer. It was scary and we both crashed a few times and got bruises, but now we are back on the bike on a much smoother trail and it’s a beautiful ride.
But the trail (like life) is ever changing….
