I know where Congress can get some cash, but quick:
Revoke the tax-free status on all churches immediately. In fact, in face of this current crisis, I suggest they levy a hefty back tax—plus interest—for their endorsements in 2000 and 2004.
This Sunday, 33 pastors will be endorsing candidates from their pulpits and here’s what one of them has to say:
“I’m going to talk about the un-biblical stands that Barack Obama takes. Nobody who follows the Bible can vote for him,” said the Rev. Wiley S. Drake of First Southern Baptist Church of Buena Park. “We may not be politically correct, but we are going to be biblically correct. We are going to vote for those who follow the Bible.”
Who are these people and how did they get so stuck back there on the evolutionary chain? Oh…! Right! There’s no such thing as evolution. Just ask Sarah Palin. She’ll tell ya!

I’m surrounded by southern baptists who think like this (and no I do not go to church, they stand out on the fucking street corners!!) and they make me so mad! I yell things at them out my window when I drive by. There’s prolly a special place in hell for me. I mean, you know, if there is one
I hate my people. But I’m not supposed to hate. Oh, I’m so torn . . . the point here is that there’s a select few giving the greater good a bad rap, and it makes me want to lock them all in a small room with me after a night of burritos, cheap Chinese food and ice cream (did I mention I’m allergic to lactose and MSG?).
Preaching politics from the pulpit is ludicrous (and illegal), especially when the above crap is being thrown around, and I’d imagine, one of those things that makes Jesus say, “Oi vey.”
This Christian can’t wait to run naked in the streets when Obama wins.
It is beyond time to take away the tax exempt status of churches. I’d also like to see that whole “faith based initiative” thing torn to shreds. Why should we be filling the pockets of the Christian supporters of Bush for programs that don’t even work? Abstinence anyone?

I agree with revoking their exempt status, especially when you consider just how much money many churches rake in! As a former Christian, I remember all too well the “guilt sermons” that were preached every time tithes and offerings didn’t meet the monthly quota.
I assume some of those churches in California will also be participating in the ‘fast and pray for passage of the gay marriage ban ballot measure’ thing. Can’t you just feel the love?
what I don’t understand is in what way exactly is Obama un-biblical? is it just the pro-choice and the pro homosexual rights? do we ignore the community organizing? the helping the poor? the job training? the tenant rights?
are these the same preachers that bla bla bla all day long about family values, and then get busted doing the lambada while snorting up cocaine ? or some such hypocritical nonsense…

Wow! Thanks for posting that video. I go out of my way to avoid hearing Bush’s voice, but when he has been pinned down so well, it’s worth hearing.
As far as churches and politicking go, tax any money that they earn that does not directly go to feeding the homeless or similar non-proselytizing or politicking behavior.
