I wouldn’t go so far as to say “ashamed,” but I do feel a little embarrassed to be a white, American woman. I can’t help being white or female, but sometimes I can’t believe I actually chose my citizenship.

To be White is to be “normal,” “invisible,” and quintessentially “American.”

I often find being quintessentially American can be embarrassing, especially when traveling. As a whole, we are often correctly looked upon as overweight, loud, and unintelligent.
