I’m having a marriage. I’m raising a kid. I’m working a job.
I’m the white adoptive mother of a black daughter and my eyes are wide open. I’ll talk adoption and race and politics and women’s issues any day of the week. I’ll also talk about shoes and Javier Bardem. I suffer from a small photography addiction and a pesky writing habit and there simply aren’t enough hours in a day to Do It All. Damn that glass ceiling!
When you boil it all down, I’m just trying to maintain the balancing act and come off as if I know exactly what I’m doing. Which, of course, I don’t. So I would suggest taking anything I say—with the exception of the adoption and race and politics and women’s issues—with a couple grains of kosher rock salt…on the rim of a glass with a margarita in it.
When in doubt, I throw my shoulders back and walk in like I own the place, desperately hoping I don’t trip.
